History of Pack 1046
Summary: Cub Scout Pack 1046 of Bowie, Maryland was founded in 1966, and is over thirty years old. It has been part of three schools (Somerset, Buckingham, and Kenilworth), and is the result of the merging of three different packs in the City of Bowie (1281, 1686, 1046). Pack 1046 is currently sponsored by the PTA at Kenilworth Elementary School. The history information will be grouped based on the school year of September to August since that is when most of the changes in adult leadership happen. Our Local Unit Number is 1046; National Unit Number is 4046; Council #82; District #8.
1910: Boy Scouts of America Chartered February 8, 1910.
1916: Boy Scouts of America Chartered by Congress on June 15, 1916.
1930: Cub Scout Program initiated.
1962: Somerset Elementary School opened in the fall.
1967-68: Cub Scout Pack 1281 created at Somerset Elementary School in Bowie, MD. (no copy of charter)
1968-69: Pack 1281 was chartered by Summerset (sic.) School Parent Teacher Association at Somerset Elementary School on February 29, 1968. The Cubmaster was John D. Lenihan, Institutional Representative was Robert E. Barba, and Committee Chairman was Houston S. Seymour.
1969-70: Somerset rechartered Pack 1281 on February 28, 1969. Cubmaster was Elijah V. Triplett, Institutional Representative was Bliss Cummings, and Committee Chairman was John R. Rehm.
1970-71: (No copy of charters) This year Pack 1281 won the National Summertime Pack Award. It was Awarded by the Prince George’s District. Buckingham Elementary also chartered Pack 1046.
1971-72: (No copy of charters)
1972-73: Somerset rechartered Pack 1281 on February 29, 1972. Cubmaster Loren D. Noland, Institutional Representative was Albert Garon, and Committee Chairman was Malcom H. Beers. Buckingham Elementary also rechartered Pack 1046.
1973-74: Somerset rechartered Pack 1281 on February 28, 1973. Buckingham Elementary also rechartered Pack 1046. Louis Maassel was Cubmaster for 1046.
1974-75: Somerset rechartered Pack 1281 on February 28, 1974. Buckingham Elementary also rechartered Pack 1046. Louis Maassel was Cubmaster for 1046. Persis Suddeth received an award during the Blue & Gold for 5 years as a Den Leader (2 with 1046, 3 with 1281). Peter Suddeth won the trophy for First in Pack at the Pinewood Derby on Nov 21, 1974.
1975-76: Somerset rechartered Pack 1281 on February 28, 1975. The Pack was honored as a 100% Boys Life Unit.
1976-77: Somerset rechartered Pack 1281 on April 30, 1976. The Pack was honored as a 100% Boys Life Unit. The Pack also received an award as a 10 year veteran unit! This year , the Buckingham Elementary Parent Teacher’s Association also chartered Pack 1046 on April 30, 1976.
1977-78: The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1686 on April 30, 1977.
1978-79: The Buckingham Elementary Parent Teacher’s Association chartered Pack 1046 on April 30, 1978.
1979-80: The Buckingham Elementary Parent Teacher’s Association chartered Pack 1046 on April 30, 1979. The Pack had a column printed in the Bowie Blade on January 18, 1979 which described the Pack Christmas Party, and Court of Honor held at Buckingham. Cubmaster was Jim Warner. Another leader in the Pack was Mr. Mark Reefe, 2803 Spindle Lane, Bowie, MD 20715 301-464-0144.

1981-82: The Buckingham Elementary Parent Teacher’s Association chartered Pack 1046 on April 30, 1981. At the close of that year, the Pack moved from Buckingham to Kenilworth Elementary School. The Pack number 1046 from Buckingham was used for the new Pack, since it was an older charter than the existing 1686 at Kenilworth. The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046 on December 31, 1981. This year, Pack 1046 earned a 15 year Veteran award!
1982-83: . The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046. Dick Nelson was Cubmaster, and Rick Rosch was Asst. Cubmaster.
1983-84: The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046 on December 31, 1983. Dick Nelson was Cubmaster, and Rick Rosch was Asst. Cubmaster. There were 10 leaders.
1984-85: The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046 on December 31, 1984. Cubmaster was Dick L. Nelson but Art Glinke took over by February’s Blue & Gold. Rick Rosch was Assistant Cubmaster. There were 7 adults and 76 boys this year.
1985-86: (Chartered, but no copy still on file) Art Glinke was Cubmaster, J. Kenneth Crelling was the Asst. Cubmaster. This year the Pack earned the National Quality Unit Award.
1986-87: (Chartered, but no copy still on file) This year the Pack earned the National Quality Unit Award. Pack 1046 won a trophy as the "Best Den at the Pax-E Camporee" for 1987. Ken Crelling was the Cubmaster, Daniel G. Henderson was the Assistant Cubmaster.
1987-88: The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046 on December 31, 1987. This year the pack was recognized by the Council for being a 100% Boys Life unit, as well as for serving youth for 21 years. The Cubmaster was Dan Henderson, Asst. Cubmaster Kirk Ellsworth, Unit Commissioner Al Priester. This year the Pack earned the National Quality Unit Award. This year the Pack made trips to Villa Rosa; The 1988 PG County Scout Show; Camp Akela at Allen’s Pond. This year’s advancements were: Bobcat=12; Wolf=7; Bear=18; Webelos=8; Arrow of Light=10! There were 4 Tigers and 38 Cubs.
1988-89: The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046 on December 31, 1988. This year the pack was recognized by the Council for being a 100% Boys Life unit, also for serving youth for 22 years. The Pack got the National Summertime Pack Award from Patuxent District. Pack 1046 won a trophy as the "Best Den at the Pax-E Camporee" for 1989 for the "Racoons". The Cubmaster was Richard Grumm, Asst. Cubmaster was David Lubers. Unit Commissioner Al Priester 262-5841. This year’s advancements were: Bobcat=35; Wolf=8; Bear=11; Webelos=16; Arrow of Light=8! There were 10 Tigers and 49 Cubs with an 89.66% advancement rate!
1989-90: The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046 on December 31, 1989. This year the pack was recognized by the Council for being a 100% Boys Life unit, also for serving youth for 23 years. Cubmaster was Richard H. Grumm, but Lutz Buesing took over by January.. There were 59 boys and 18 adults registered this year. We got the Quality Unit Award this year. Jackie Macri was the Unit Commissioner. Pack earned $1811.55 from Tom Watts sales! 24 boys went to Camp Akela, and 11 went to Goshen. Pack also attended Cub Scout Kite Day at Adelphi Manor.
1990-91: The Kenilworth Elementary School Parent Teaches Association chartered Pack 1046 on December 31, 1990. This year the pack was recognized by the Council for being a 100% Boys Life unit, as well as for serving youth for 24 years. We also received the National Summertime Pack Award from Patuxent District, and the National Quality Unit Award. Cubmaster was Lutz G. Buesing, CA was Bob King. Jackie Macri was the Unit Commissioner. The Pack earned $2200 from Tom Watts sales, but needed to put exact names on the kits to identify who caused damage to their items so they couldn’t be sold or returned. Pack 1046 won a trophy as the "Best Den at the Pax-E Camporee" for 1991 as the "Cobras". There were 48 boys and 18 adults registered with the Pack this year. This year’s advancements were: Bobcat=30; Wolf=20; Bear=13; Webelos=14; Arrow of Light=4!
1991-92: (No copy of charter) Lutz Buesing was CM, Bob King CA, Jackie Macri UC. 6 boys attended Camp Akela. 8 boys went to Goshen. Pack attended the Scout Show. The Pack won the Summertime Pack Award. The Pack also won the Award for Merit and Honor in Advancement. The Pack attended Camp Akela in Greenbelt, 9 boys went to Goshen. This year’s advancements were: Bobcat=17; Wolf=18; Bear=22; Webelos=9; Arrow of Light=9!
1992-93: (No copy of charter) This year the pack won the National Summertime Pack Award and 1993 Quality Unit. Lutz Buesing the CM, Robert King was CA, Jackie Macri was UC. The Pack earned 1833.75 from Popcorn Sales this year and had $1025.80 in the budget (which was considered excellent!)

1996-97: (No copy of charter) The Cubmaster was Jeff Diamond. This year, the Pack received the 30 year Veteran Unit award, as well as the 1997 Quality Unit award. The Tiger Den won Second Place for Tigers in the Patuxent District Regional Pinewood Derby, lead by Tiger Coach Brian Suddeth. We received an attendance ribbon for the Fall Camporee (attended by two Tigers.) Ribbon for attending 1996 Pow Wow. No scouts eligible for Arrow of Light.

Pack earned the 1998 Quality Unit Award, National Summertime Pack Award 1997, National Summertime Den Award for the Tigers, and 4 scouts qualified for the individual National Summertime Award (Michael Dover (Earned Eagle), Ronnie Sinclair, Patrick Suddeth (Earned Eagle), Michael Travis). No scouts eligable for Arrow of Light.
1998-99: Cubmaster: Brian Suddeth. AC David Smith. Pack earned the 1999 Quality Unit Award, National Summertime Pack Award 1998. Two Scouts made the Arrow of Light: Dragon Patrol - Jeremy Seppi and Larry Perko.

Ten Scouts made the Arrow of Light: Troll Patrol: Robert Kerri Godstrey, Nicholas Rice, John Rose, Drew Schneider; Rattlesnake Patrol: Daniel Casto, Michael Casto, Justin Grahavac, Scott Schmidt (Earned Eagle), Luke Seppi, Kyle Sinclair.
2003-2004: Cubmaster - John Horvath, Asst. Cubmaster - Carl Pollack. Pack earned the 2003 National Summertime Pack Award, 2003 Quality Unit Award. The Pack earned $771.84 from Popcorn Sales this year.
